  • April Showers 2014 Roundup

    Per Cherith el dilluns, 5 maig 2014 - 12:12am
    Tipus de missatge:

Now that April has left us for another year, we must also leave behind our April Showers fandom celebrations.

But that doesn't mean that the fun is over! Below, we've collected the links to every fandom post we made, along with links to each fandom's AO3 and Fanlore pages, so you can make sure you didn't miss any of them. And the April Showers Recs (2014) collection has been filled with recommended works in dozens of fandoms, perfect to browse through while waiting for those May Flowers to appear.

We'd love to thank each and every one of you who reblogged, retweeted, liked, and clicked on any of our tweets or Tumblr posts ... but that would take too long and would get in the way of your checking out all the great fandoms listed here!

So, without further ado, here are the celebrated fandoms of April Showers 2014.

    Fanlore editing party!

Keen to add your fannish memories to Fanlore but not sure where to start? Need your hand held as you make your first wiki edits? Or keen to share your skillz as an experienced Fanlore editor? Join Fanlore staff in the Fanlore chatroom for an editing party! You'll be able to get help making your first forays into editing Fanlore, toss around ideas for new pages, and ask questions. Everyone is welcome!

Join them on Saturday, 19 April, from 20:00 to 22:30 UTC. (What's the start time in my timezone?)

Here at the OTW, preserving fannish history is a central part of our mission! We're proud to be able to offer fans a place to archive their works on the Archive of Our Own, and tell their own fannish histories on Fanlore. Both of these sites passed major milestones in February and represent works and stories about many thousands of fandoms.

However, we know that there are a lot more histories and fanworks out in the world which haven't found their way to the AO3 or Fanlore. So this month, we invite you to bring us fannish April showers by digging out those old zines, memories of past cons, archived personal webpages, tales of shipwars and fannish events, works on slowly-decaying archives, new works you've been putting off creating, and more! Help us celebrate fandom's history and diversity by uploading your old (and new) works to the AO3 and by telling your tales on Fanlore. When uploading to the AO3, you can tag your uploaded works April Showers 2014

Alternatively, celebrate your favorite fanworks on the Archive by sharing your recs with us. To do so, simply bookmark the fanwork in question and add it to our April Showers Recs collection.

Screen capture of the bookmark screen showing the Notes box, the Collections field (just type in April Showers Recs 2014, or use the autocomplete) and the Rec ticky box

To do this, either create a new bookmark of the work or edit an existing bookmark you'd like to highlight for this occasion. In the Bookmarking screen, scroll to the bottom, check the "Rec" box and add the name "April Showers Recs 2014" in the collection field. When sharing your recs, we encourage you to leave some comments about it in the Notes section, to help guide other fans.

For our part, we'll be highlighting a different fandom for each day of the month through our social media sites:

Check them for the hashtag #aprilshowers! We hope to jog your memories about fannish loves of the past and highlight some currently active fandom activity. However, don't feel you have to stick to the fandoms we highlight!

  • Update on the Milestone weekend

    Tipus de missatge:

Yesterday the AO3 reached its one million milestone and here are some things that have been taking place since.

    ao3million posts

Since our milestone 354 new works have been posted to AO3 using the AO3 1 Million tag. \o/ for new fanworks!

There have also been a lot of fic recs flying around on Twitter and Tumblr under the #ao3million tag. So if you're looking for something new, check those out and remember to add your own!

It's been very moving to the staff and volunteers to read the many personal messages of how much AO3 has meant to people. Thank you for sharing those with us and also to the new donors who have stepped forward to help us keep things running!

    Parties!

The organizers of Nine World's fanfic programming last year are hosting a party in London to celebrate AO3's milestone. It will be held on March 8 from 5-11 pm at The Blue Lion. Let them know you'll be there.

If you are planning parties or events yourself, let us know here in comments and we'll keep updating this post with information.

    Another milestone!

The AO3's sister project, Fanlore, has also zoomed past a milestone. Last year it was passing 25,000 articles. Now it's passed its 500,000th edit on the same day that AO3 hit 1 million! Please join us in congratulating all the editors, gardeners, and staffers who have worked on those many entries <3

    Yet to come

We plan to keep celebrating through March, so stay tuned for our announcement next weekend with details of upcoming events. We'll be counting on your input! And in another few days we'll be letting you know about something we're planning for coming years. So keep an eye on OTW News.

In the meantime, let us know what you've been seeing, planning, and doing!

  • AO3 Reaches 1 Million Fanworks

Per Claudia Rebaza el dissabte, 15 febrer 2014 - 1:51pm
    Tipus de missatge:

AO3 logo wearing a party hat amidst confetti with text of '1 Million Celebration'

Today the Archive of Our Own passed the 1 million fanworks mark!

On November 14, 2009, the AO3 entered open beta. Two days into the launch, AO3 News shared the following statistics:

    "Total invitations issued: 1410
Number of accounts before Open Beta: 347
Number of accounts at present: 1076
Number of works before Open Beta: 6598
Number of works at present: 9506
Number of fandoms represented before Open Beta: 674
Number of fandoms represented at present: 886"

And now, just four years and two months later, AO3 has over 1 million works representing 14,353 fandoms! The site has over 270,000 registered users (with at least 1 million unregistered users visiting each day) and is still growing. AO3 currently issues 750 invitations a day, so if you’re not already registered, now is a great time to join the Archive.

    What does this mean?

AO3’s rapid growth shows the ever-increasing number of fans creating and sharing fanworks online. This site is still relatively young, joining a long line of fanwork archives, from those created to host a single fan’s work to the many dedicated to individual fandoms, characters and relationships; particular topics or genres; specific languages or countries; or formats and connected fandoms. We want to honor and celebrate the millions of fanworks that have come before those found at AO3 as well.

The sheer number of visitors to AO3 also represents the importance of fanworks to the everyday life of millions of people internationally. Whether fans are creating, commenting, sharing or viewing, they engage in fannish activities every single day — something that’s never more clear than when the Archive can’t be accessed! We will continue to work hard to keep your fanworks available for a long time to come.

Finally, the Archive is one of a very small number of open-source projects founded and largely staffed by women, another contribution fans have made to the internet as a whole. Many women who were not previously involved in technology have learned new skills in the name of fannish activities, and the AO3 is proud to stand as a shining example of this growth.

    Help us celebrate!

As part of our celebration today, what could be more fitting than more fanworks? If you’d like to create a fanwork today and connect it to our milestone, tag it with “AO3 1 Million”.

Even if you’re not posting a new work, you can still join in by sharing your favorite works. If you have a Twitter or Tumblr account, you can use the “Share” button on your favorite works and tag your posts or tweets “ao3million”. (Wouldn’t it be great if we could get this important milestone to trend?)

And if you aren't already following us, don't forget to join us on Twitter at ao3org or Tumblr at AO3 News! One of our volunteers, Rachel G., has made the following graphics for you to snag and repost to let everyone know that you are an AO3 user who is celebrating today.

    The future of the Archive

So what does the future hold? Well, that’s entirely up to you! The Archive would be empty without the fans who post their works or interact with the works of others, and it wouldn’t exist without the hard work of fans who volunteer to develop features, organize tags, respond to users, and keep an eye on performance. We all owe those volunteers, past and present, enormous thanks for giving us this site to use.

We would also like to thank our fellow fans who have contributed financially to AO3’s parent organization, the Organization for Transformative Works, in order to fund its development and keep the treats flowing to fans around the world.

If you value the AO3 and are able to help support it, please bring a gift to today's virtual party celebrating this milestone. And if you can't, we hope you'll spread the word to those who can.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us reach this exciting day! We couldn’t have done it without you.

Today, we're excited to announce the opening of applications for:

    • Development & Membership Committee Staffer - 27 January 2014

    • Translation Committee Staffer - 27 January 2014
    • Communications Committee: AD&T Liaison - open until filled

We have included more information on each role below. Open roles and applications will always be available at the volunteering page. If you don't see a role that fits with your skills and interests now, keep an eye on the listings. We plan to put up new applications every few weeks, and we will also publicize new roles as they become available.

All applications generate a confirmation page and an auto-reply to your e-mail address. We encourage you to read the confirmation page and to whitelist volunteers -(at)- transformativeworks -(dot)- org in your e-mail client. If you do not receive the auto-reply within 24 hours, please check your spam filters and then contact us.

If you have questions regarding volunteering for the OTW, check out our Volunteering FAQ.

    Development & Membership Committee Staffer
The Development & Membership committee (DevMem) coordinates the OTW's fundraising and membership-building activities. Our work includes planning membership drives, designing a convention outreach process, answering questions from donors, and exploring new fundraising opportunities. If you have skills and interests in fundraising, writing or designing promotional content, or customer service, consider applying to join our staff.

Applications are due 27 January 2014

    Translation Committee Staffer
The Translation Committee coordinates localization efforts across the OTW: the translation of site pages, news posts, Archive FAQs, AO3 Support tickets, and any inquiry that reaches a committee or volunteer group in languages they can’t translate themselves. While volunteers do the actual text translation and editing, staff helps them by keeping track of priorities, deadlines and pending tasks; assigning work; talking and working with other committees to arrange tools for the volunteers; uploading translated documents; writing training and procedures documentation; and many other tasks involved in managing a wide, diverse and very active volunteer pool.

If you enjoy teamwork, if you like organizing, writing documentation and working with people, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help us reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you!

Applications are due 27 January 2014

    Communications Committee: AD&T Liaison

Communications staffers are responsible for the distribution of information internally to OTW personnel and externally to the general public, the media, fans, and other fannish organizations. Communications is also typically the first point of contact for someone interested in or wanting help from OTW.

The position of AD&T liaison requires an individual with an interest in technical writing to help maintain that area of our communications and outreach strategy. If you are interested in the behind-the-scenes development of an open-source project, and would like to help us create and share news about the AO3, this is the position for you!

Applications will be accepted until the role is filled.

We recently deployed new code, which fixed a couple of very old bugs and introduced improvements to the kudos feature. Behind the scenes, we've been working on setting up new servers and tweaking server settings to make everything run a little more smoothly during peak times. The end of the year (holiday season in many parts of the world) usually means more people with more free time to participate in more challenges, read more fic, or post more fanart, resulting in more site usage. Today, we're excited to announce the opening of applications for:

    • Strategic Planning Staff - Deadline: 7 October 2013
    • Accessibility, Design & Technology (AD&T) Coding Volunteer - Closing after 20 applications
    • Tag Wrangling volunteer - Closing after 50 applications

We also have one role still open for additional technical staff

    • Web Developer Staff

We have included more information on each role below. Open roles and applications will always be available at the volunteering page. If you don't see a role that fits with your skills and interests now, keep an eye on the listings.

    Strategic Planning Staff
The Strategic Planning Committee is looking for a staff member! We need someone interested in strategic planning, writing, and data processing who is willing to jump in with both feet. We're a professional, collaborative committee of people who believe in supporting each other through our work, and we want someone who is excited about the idea of being part of an environment of support, creativity, and critique. We are willing to train the right person in the OTW's processes, practices, and tools if you're willing to commit your time and energy to us!

Applications for this role will be accepted until 7 October 2013.

Accessibility, Design & Technology (AD&T) Coding Volunteer
The Accessibility, Design, & Technology committee is the guiding body that coordinates software design and development on behalf of the Organization for Transformative Works. AD&T is committed to developing high quality, accessible products that support the goals of the OTW while having a good time and providing opportunities for professional and personal growth for its members.

The main project currently occupying the committee is the creation and ongoing maintenance of the Archive of Our Own, a free, Open Source website currently supporting over 200,000 registered users and weathering 38 million page views a week.

We are looking for experienced coders to join our team of volunteers and help us fix bugs and improve existing features.

Applications for this role will be closed after we have received 20.

Tag Wrangling volunteers The Tag Wranglers are responsible for keeping the hundreds of thousands of tags on AO3 in some kind of order! We choose which form of a fandom title appears on the Media pages, as well as all the character, relationship, and additional tags which appear in the filters and the auto-complete, and we link tags together to make all the works and bookmarks on the archive easier to browse and search (so that users can find exactly what they’re looking for, whether that’s Steve/Tony with tentacles or g-rated Rose/Kanaya fluff).

If you like organizing, bringing order to chaos, excuses to fact-check your favorite fandom canons, or you just get a kick out of seeing all the wacky and wonderful terms fans come up with, you might enjoy tag wrangling! To join our team, click through to the job description and application form.

Please note: due to (amazing!) interest in wrangling volunteering, we’re currently looking for wranglers for specific fandoms only. See the application within for which fandoms are in need.

Applications will be closed after we have received 50.

  • AO3 Passes 200,000 User Accounts

Per Claudia Rebaza el dimecres, 28 agost 2013 - 3:49pm
    Tipus de missatge:

At the start of 2013 we posted about the AO3's growth in 2012. Those numbers showed new milestones in total works, total fandoms, total collections, total Support tickets answered, and total account users.

At the time we said, "While we still have a large body of users awaiting accounts, currently around 10,000, this is down significantly from the 30,000+ that we saw through the latter half of 2012, and we hope to decrease the wait further in 2013. It seems likely that Archive use will continue growing strongly this year, possibly even repeating 2012's feat of more than doubling its user base."

And it has! As of yesterday the Archive passed 200,000 users. By March the wait for an account dropped to 24-48 hours and we've been averaging about 500 new users a day.

For those who are feeling nostalgic, you may want to take a look back at a post recapping the AO3's first year in open beta.

When we entered Open Beta on 15 November 2009 we had:

    • 347 users
    • 668 fandoms
    • 6565 works

The site went through a 3000% increase in users that first year and an equally phenomenal jump in content. Yet today we gain more users each day than we started with in 2009.

    Visitors from Everywhere!

While account holder statistics are good to know, there are many more people using AO3 than currently have accounts. Whether this is because they're random visitors, casual users, or don't find the benefits of an account appealing, we still have some clues that they're stopping by. For example, in the month of July the AO3 served pages to 3,663,572 unique IP addresses. So even if everyone with an account was using 5 different locations to access us, that's an awful lot of non-account visitors!

Another clue comes from the amount of bandwidth we're using. From just over 5 terabytes served in January we used 7.9 in July. If that pace keeps up we'll have doubled our use this year.

We've also been able to see the many countries that people are clicking in from. We've counted over 60 countries with simultaneous user activity over the past several months (including Denmark, Kenya, Jordan, Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Uruguay, just to name a few at random), and many more with at least a handful of visitors this year.

    Technology Old and New

We also took note of browser usage among our users and have shown the top 20 in the graph below. In the month of July this ranged from 43.5 pages per minute being served to a Windows IE 8 browser to 533 per minute being served to Windows Chrome 28.

Pie chart of browsers that accessed AO3 in July 2013

    Users Doing Stuff!

Here's a quick look at the growth in certain actions on the site.

The number of users we've watched grow over the years is dwarfed by the much larger amount of commenting and bookmarking activity. In the chart below the red line below barely seems to increase compared to the growth in commenting activity this year (green line).

Graph showing growth in comments vs. user accounts

Because the scale of growth is so different for these two actions we can also look at actual numbers taken from the graph below. Comment growth has been somewhat less than that of bookmarking (yellow line). In July there were 299,849 comments left and 438,746 bookmarks added. But both are far less than the growth of kudos (orange line) which is often used by people who don't have accounts or aren't logged in. There were 1,544,028 kudos given in July 2013 alone.

Graph showing growth in comments vs. bookmarks vs. kudos

We welcome all our new users, whether they use an account or not, and hope that they enjoy their time on the site! If you're hesitant to get an account because of long wait times, don't forget that our automated invites should arrive within two days of your request. If you don't see it, please check your spam folder and make sure that @archiveofourown.org is whitelisted.

    Per Camden el dimarts, 16 juliol 2013 - 7:02pm
    Tipus de missatge:

Hello AO3! This newsletter has been, um, a long time coming for which we sincerely apologize. Here's what we've been up to in the past three months.

    Cool stuff on the Archive!

To our overwhelming delight, Time Magazine named us as one of the "50 Best Websites of 2013." Thank you to everyone -- from staffers to users -- who make this website what it is!

852 Prospect moved in with us in May. This move was orchestrated by the hard work of the 852 Prospect archivists, Open Doors and AD&T. Please join us in welcoming the Archive to the Archive!

Tag Wrangling has been hard at work with their new tools to help users search by original language titles as well as transliterated fandom titles. Check out more information about these tools here.

There were two small deploys in early May and late June: Releases 0.9.6.1 and 0.9.7. 0.9.6.1 focused on code needed for the 852 Prospect move as well as a couple of fixes. 0.9.7 included more fixes as well as integrating Travis-CI into the testing process.

Our Content Policy workgroup has been hard at work with our TOS and FAQ in anticipation of the inclusion of fannish nonfiction on the Archive. These proposed changes went up for public review at the end of June. We thank everyone who provided input!

The OTW unveiled the Archive of Our Own Diversity Statement, a statement which has been years in the making. We encourage you all to read it and hold us to it as we continue to develop the Archive in the many years to come.

What’s up in the world of tags?

Several small changes to guidelines have clarified what freeform tags we canonize, including how we handle episode tags and fandom fusion AUs - check out the subtags of Alternate Universe - Fusion to find Jane Austen fusions and your fandom favorites with Pokemon! We've also changed guidelines for translated fandom tags, so you may notice Japanese, Cyrillic, and other non-Latin alphabets when browsing the fandoms lists.

    Adventures with Support

We have new people! Annie, girlmarauders, and Katherine have all joined our merry little band. Bring on the tickets!

    AD&T Committee business of note

AD&T has been busy with small fixes and releases as well as working on documentation and necessary groundwork to recruit new coders in the fall!

Tag Wrangling Committee business of note

We've inducted and trained almost 50 new volunteers in May, and are planning to re-open wrangling volunteering on a limited basis in July. The wrangling staff has also posted several more advanced tutorials for both our new wranglers and experienced wranglers, so all of us are wrangling "on the same page", so to speak. With over 12,000 canonical fandoms on the Archive, all the work of our wrangling volunteers is very appreciated!

    Questions? Comments?

We welcome feedback from users! If you have questions or comments, feel free to leave them in the comments of the latest news post, or send in a Support request (if you're reporting a bug, please send that to Support, as they're super efficient - comments on our news posts sometimes get overlooked).
