This month we have two exciting calls for papers related to fandom and fan studies.

The first comes from The Phoenix Papers, for their first edition. The online peer-reviewed journal welcomes articles on fandom and media topics as well as reviews of anime, manga, books, movies, video games, TV series, web series, musical albums, performances, and other pop culture media products. Scholars at all levels of achievement, whether affiliated with an institution or independent, are encouraged to contribute. Completed articles or reviews are due by 15 December 2012 for the first issue. Articles may be on any topic relevant to US or global fandom and/or media studies. In general, reviews should be of items from 2009 onward with precedence given to those from the current year. For articles, please include a 200-250 word abstract and institutional affiliation, if any. For reviews, please indicate the item to be reviewed, why it is a significant or interesting work, and the intended approach.

TV Fangdom: A Conference on Television Vampires, to be held 7-8 June 2013 at the University of Northampton in the United Kingdom, has issued a call for proposals for 20-minute paper sessions at the conference. The organizers are especially looking for papers that examine older TV shows, shows that have rarely been considered as vampire fictions, and international vampire TV. Proposals of 250 words (plus a 100 word biography) are due no later than 16 December 2012.

We also have received a request for research participation from Dianna Fielding, who is writing an Honors Thesis towards her bachelors degree in sociology from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ms. Fielding put out a call to interview genderswap fanfic authors in June, and participation in that process has led her to expand her research to survey 'fan producers' in general (fanfic authors, fan artists, fan commentators, vidders, fandom bloggers, etc.).

You may see the consent and contact information for Dianna on the cover page of the survey.

Her thesis will be available through the Hamline University library and will also be posted to her blog.

"This survey is here to gather information about how readers over the age of 13 have and continue to interact with their favorite media through fan works including fanfiction, fan art, and fan videos. Specifically we are interested in how participating in fandom has influenced your reading, writing, creativity, and literacy."

    and

"[I]dentities will be concealed and pseudonyms may be used if requested. If a respondent over 18 has indicated we may do so, we may quote specific responses in a future print publication, but would only do so after we have their express, written permission.

We will be using the information gathered from this survey to report back to our colleagues in the library world about fandom, fan work, and participatory fan culture and its connections to reading, authorship, literacy, and creativity. We will not be using any identifying information in our reports except general age categories, and we will never connect your personal information with our survey results.

If you would like to grant us permission to use your full name and age in reporting about this survey, there will be an option at the finish of the survey to let us know your information and to grant us permission to use your name. • Spotlight on Events Calendar

By Claudia Rebaza on Thursday, 27 October 2011 - 4:19pm
    Message type:

Even people who volunteer for the OTW can be unaware of the organization's different features and projects. There's a lot going on! I recently learned about a feature on the website that could use some more contributions, and may be getting some further development in the coming year.

The OTW website, transformativeworks.org, has a link to the Events Calendar always visible on the sidebar, right under the "Donate Now" button. You can list events by category, see the full calendar, or see events from only a single upcoming month. These events take place around the world and focus on a variety of fan-related gatherings and other happenings, including OTW events.

As an example, one category is Technology Events. That includes listings of in-person meetings and conferences as well as online events such as Ada Lovelace Day.

You're also welcome to submit an event! Submitted items are then reviewed and added to the calendar by OTW events staff. Anyone who is involved in a fan-related event, or even who knows about an event that is not yet listed, can contribute to the calendar. The form asks for a web link to the event's official contact information if possible, and includes a description field where you can add more information or a specific call to activity.

An example of how useful this can be is our listing for next year's Harry Potter convention in Orlando, Florida: Ascendio. Our calendar listings include the Ascendio Call for Papers as well as a reminder that fans should sign up for rooms if they want to hold meetups - such as gatherings of OTW members attending the con!

Another upcoming event is a drive to create programming devoted to fic, vids, podfic, zines, and fanart at Dragon*Con. A fan is asking the OTW community for help developing ideas as well as seeking OTW-related fans who might be interested in participating or in being a panelist.

The calendar is a collaboration between the OTW's Webmasters and Development & Membership committees. Web built it, and DevMem now gather, review, and post events. If this work sounds interesting to you, DevMem is looking for additional members. They would like someone who will pro-actively maintain the calendar; send materials to conferences and cons; and find OTW speakers/panels/etc. for events if requested. Please contact the Volunteers and Recruiting committee if you would be interested in volunteering!

    CALL FOR PAPERS
American University Washington College of Law

    IP/Gender: Mapping the Connections
    6th Annual Symposium
    April 24, 2009

Special Theme: Female Fan Cultures and Intellectual Property

    Sponsored by:
American University Washington College of Law’s
Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property
    Women and the Law Program
Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

    In collaboration with:
American University’s Center for Social Media
    The Organization for Transformative Works
    Rebecca Tushnet, Georgetown University
    Francesca Coppa, Muhlenberg College

Deadline for submission of abstracts: December 19, 2008

The 6th Annual Symposium on “IP/Gender: Mapping the Connections” seeks papers on female subcultures and their relationship to intellectual property and copyright regimes, with a particular emphasis on fan works and culture. Appropriate topics include: fan arts, including fan fiction, arts, music, filk, crafts, and vids; and fan communities: including clubs, forums, lists, websites, wikis, discussion groups, rec sites, and other creative, celebratory, or analytical communities.

    Introduction & Context

Historically, the study of subcultures has been biased toward male groups and activities: first, because male activities (e.g. punk rock, motorcycling, football hooliganism) tend to be public, and therefore visible; second, because many male groups have been seen as overtly resistant to mainstream norms. In contrast, many female subcultural activities took place in private, in the domestic realm or in other less visible spaces, and those that were visible tended, in the words of Sarah Thornton, to be "relegated to the realm of a passive and feminized 'mainstream' (a colloquial term against which scholars have all too often defined their subcultures)"; in other words, the things women did and do have often been framed as mainstream, passive, commodified, and derivative; consuming (in the negative sense of passive product consumption), rather than consuming in the sense of a passionate obsession or devotion to art or criticism.

This has changed significantly in the last twenty years, not only due to a rising feminist interest in subculture studies but also with the rise of fan and audience studies. In their pioneering "Girls and Subcultures" (1975), Angela McRobbie and Jenny Garber presciently suggested that scholars turn their attention "toward more immediately recognizable teenage and pre-teenage female spheres like those forming around teenybop stars and the pop-music industry." Even they had trouble seeing what girls do as interesting and importing, noting that "[b]oys tended to have a more participative and a more technically-informed relationship with pop, where girls in contrast became fans and readers of pop-influenced love comics." McRobbie and Garber don't associate being "fans" with participation, and they see girls as "readers" only. In fact, as we know from fifteen years of fan and audience studies, fandom is a highly participatory culture, and female fans also write, edit, draw, paint, "manip," design, code, and otherwise make things.

However, even within this brave new world of mashup, remix, and fan cultures, what boys do (fan films, machinima, music mash-ups, DJing) is often seen by outsiders and critics as better--more interesting, more original, more clearly transformative-- than what girls do (fan fiction, fan art, vidding, coding fan sites, social networking). This normative judgment risks legal consequences.

We are seeking projects that investigate the ways in which issues of originality and ownership as related to copyright and other issues of intellectual property intersect with this gendered understanding of cultural productions and engagement, especially since these historically female subcultural activities and practices have increasingly become culture.
