The Possibilities are Endless: OTW October Membership Drive

When it comes to fannish creativity, the possibilities are endless. We push the boundaries of our favorite narratives. We fill in missing pieces and imagine alternatives. We worldbuild, ship, genderswap, and cross over. We transform our favorite characters into penguins or werewolves or baristas. We ask: what if?

The Organization for Transformative Works is a result of this boundless creativity. The OTW exists because fans asked: what if? What if fans took a more active role in legal debates that affect our rights? What if we had an archive that wasn't subject to advertiser pressure? What if we created a space to share our fannish history in our own words? Thanks to the hard work and financial support of numerous fans, these possibilities have become reality.

The OTW's work remains possible thanks to the ongoing support of our generous donors and volunteers. During our membership drive from now through October 7, we invite you to become an OTW member by making a donation of US$10 or more. Your donation will help to sustain the Archive of Our Own, Open Doors, Transformative Works and Cultures, Fanlore, Fanhackers, and our legal advocacy work. If you donate US$50 or more, you can opt to receive a thank-you gift to proudly show off your support.

Donations to OTW are tax deductible in the United States. If you have questions about donating, please visit our membership FAQ (located at the bottom of the donation page) or contact the Development & Membership committee.

The OTW and its projects are made possible by fans like you. Please donate today.

Hi
I donated this spring and I will do it again next year - but how can I hide the banner permanent?

Once you click to "hide the banner" it should stay closed until your browser session ends, even if you click on new pages on the AO3. Once you come back in a new session, however, it will be there again (until our drive ends on October 8).

This should be true whether you're logged into an AO3 account or not.

Hello,

I copypastaed the linking code, but it gave Dreamwidth a bit of an indigestion. :-)

The alt text for the banner image has an extra opening double quote, but no closing simple quote or double quote after "Endless".

Thanks, I fixed that, but I'm not sure what's happening regarding the c&p on Dreamwidth. I have seen others embed it there so I don't think it should be the site.

Hi,

I also had problems copy and pasting into Dreamwidth. I had to strip out all the div coding (leaving just the web link and the image) before it would post.

Thanks for letting us know that, and what worked for you.

I want to donate, but I do not have, nor will I sign up for, a PayPal account. Is sending a check the only way I can give money, then? Because I will try to remember that, but chances are high I'll forget.

Hello Yahtzee,

Thank you for your interest in supporting us, and being willing to go the extra step to work out how.

There is a way to pay by credit card. If you choose the 'PayPal standard settings' option and then click on the 'continue' button, this should lead you to a PayPal screen where you can use either just a credit card or a PayPal account. There will be a link that says something along the lines of "don't have paypal? pay by card," that you will click on and will allow you to complete the transaction with a card.

PayPal is the mechanism through which we process payments, but you don't have to actually sign up with them to complete your donation.

If you have any technical issues that prevent you from seeing this option, please let us know!

I just got this error message when I tried to donate:
Return to merchant and try a different payment method
We are not able to process your payment using your PayPal account at this time. Please return to the merchant's website and try using a different payment method (if available).

Please advise?

This sounds like it might be a problem with your PayPal account. I suggest you wait a while and try again, perhaps using a different Web browser. If the problem persists, you might need to submit a customer support request to PayPal.

Another option is to donate via check. If you'd like to do that, please fill out the PDF Donation Form and mail it with your check to:

Thanks for your support!

I didn't know this organisation existed or I would have been involved sooner.

Thank you so much for just existing (sorry for corniness lol)! It's disappointing when I reread some works and sometimes they aren't there, so you are really doing an awesome deed here. Keep up the hard work!

Your projects are amazing. Thank you again!!

I'm definitely donating!

With regards and from a new fan,
Dae

Thanks so much for your kind words -- I'll be sure to pass them along to the Open Doors staff. And thank you for your support!

Hi Kristen,
I just tried with my Paypal and I get the same error message. Was using Chrome so I tried using IE which gave me the same error as well. And I can't send a cheque since I'm not local...
Any ideas?

Hi, Yin,

I'm sorry you're still having difficulties. I just checked the PayPal user forums and learned that a lot of people have gotten this error message regardless of whom they were trying to donate to or purchase from.

I suggest that you log in to your PayPal account and look for any alert messages or outdated information (such as an expired credit card). If you don't see anything like that, try contacting PayPal's customer support service: https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/helpcenter/helphub/home/

Best,
Kristen

We do accept credit cards; however, we use PayPal as our credit card processor, so it's possible you might run into the same problem. To make a credit card donation, you would fill out the donation form the same way you have been, choosing "PayPal Standard Settings" as your payment method, and then after you are redirected to the PayPal website you would choose to pay using your credit card instead of whatever other method you've been choosing. That is assuming that PayPal is letting you get far enough to choose a payment method. If it isn't, I'm afraid you'll have to wait and see what their customer support says. Sorry about that. :(

Well, I got my reply, and it basically says that they do not have a remittance license, charties, NPO blah blah outside of my country. It was with effect from 31st March 2013. Which is strange because I was able to donate to the Wildlife Fund. And they replied that I should use a different method of payment -_-

How about a Cashier's Order? :(

We do now! Thanks for the catch.
