Archive of Our Own

100k Works!

Congratulations to the Archive of Our Own and to all of our users on reaching the amazing total of ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND WORKS. Nearly 8500 fans archiving their work in just short of 5500 fandoms -- we might not be able to say that there's something there for everyone yet, but we're getting close!

We're less than a year into our open beta phase, and the AO3 has grown and improved daily, with help, support, and feedback from fans all over the world. The AO3 is an important and groundbreaking open source project, one of the only such projects in the world where women are in the majority, and where we welcome anyone who wants to help.

This is our place: we've built it, we can keep it. We have a home where we aren't merely tolerated, but welcomed.

Fandom. We're amazing, you know? \o/

Accessibility, Design and Technology Update August 2010

This isn't so much a meeting update as a general round-up of news from AD&T, since the writing up of reports, er... got away from me a little. But that means it is an extra tasty update!

More fannish disruptions and closures

The OTW has been told that fanfiction.net is removing fanfic written for the HBO show True Blood; we have given Archive of Our Own codes to the writers who contacted us and want to remind fandom at large that right now, most people who sign up for an account get one within 48 hours. Please spread the word if you have connections in True Blood fandom - and of course all fandoms are welcome! (We currently have 5,352!)

We also are sorry for those fans who lost their accounts when Blogetery.com, a Wordpress hosting site with over 70,000 blogs, shut down. BurstNet, the web hosting company who own the Blogetery.com servers, say that they shut down the site after receiving 'a notice of a critical nature from law enforcement officials'. The BBC and C-Net report that the shutdown was due to terrorist-related activity on Blogetry involving possible links to al-Qaeda.

While the nature of the material posted on Blogetry makes it understandable that BurstNet shold take immediate action, this has left the great bulk of users not knowing when or if they'll regain access to their accounts.

If you or someone you know hosted fanfic on Blogetry, please consider hosting or backing up your work at the Archive of Our Own; again, most people who join the queue get accounts within 48 hours.

2010 mid-year Abuse report

Time flies when you’re having fun — it’s time for the report from the Abuse committee already! We are delighted to inform you that this will be a really short report because everyone on the Archive of Our Own has been busy having fun, too, and has left us alone.

Since the Archive of Our Own went into Open Beta in November 2009, the Abuse committee has dealt with a total of seven cases. Of these, three involved warnings concerns, two were fannish next-of-kin arrangements, one was a fair use concern, and one was a spam report.

All of these cases have been resolved.

We remind users that the Terms of Service are always available for your perusal, before and after you get an invitation to the Archive, and that we are here for you! Go forth, enjoy the Archive, and be excellent to one another.

Archive status: Support form down - and back up!

Edit 18.37 UTC 9 June 2010: We're happy to say this issue has been resolved and the form is back to normal!

Due to an issue with the tool we use to host Support bugs, the Support form on the Archive is currently broken. We hope to have the problem resolved very soon, but in the meantime please see our master post on the Archive for details of how to contact our Support team.

We'll update again when the problem is resolved - thank you for your patience in the meantime!

The future of the Archive - tell us your hopes and dreams!

This post is mirrored from an original post on the Archive of Our Own, where it is also available in Deutsch and Español.

We recently published an updated version of the Roadmap for the Archive of Our Own, which shows all the amazing work we've already done and all the big things we plan for the future. All the original plans for the Archive grew out of fannish ideas for a 'dream Archive', and we're really proud of the way those dreams are developing into reality.

Now that the Archive is a reality, we have started to think up features which we had never even thought of. We get loads of great feedback from the fannish community via our Support and Feedback form and have used lots of those ideas to make improvements. However, we always love to hear more ideas! If there's a new feature or an enhancement you'd love to see on the Archive, please comment on this post and let us know! What's your dream feature or the one thing that bugs you? Is there something we didn't mention on the Roadmap that you'd love to see us do? No suggestion too big or too small - tell us your sparkly unicorn ideas!

We can't promise to implement everything that is suggested, but we do our best to incorporate all the cool ideas we get from users. And if you'd like to help us turn even more ideas into a reality, we always welcome volunteers!
